THEATRE CLASSES

A Vocal Approach to Acting

This eight week actors training course focuses on vocal delivery and projection and finishes with a public performance of the student's work. Classes will be held every Monday from 7:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. beginning September 24 through November 12 with performances November 16 & 17 at Gorilla Theatre's Apehouse, 517 E 18th Street, Kansas City, MO. The fee for the course is $200. Max number of students: 16. Materials Fee: $15 for the book Make Your Voice Heard by Chuck Jones.

As a second generation student of the Chuck Jones method, instructor Caroline Oates will lead you through these highly effective exercises. In Jones' book Make Your Voice Heard he states that actors who have followed his advice have told him that:

  • Their voices improve in power and range.
  • They have more vocal stamina.
  • They are more focused in their acting.
  • The honesty of their acting has grown and, in fact, their ability to act well has strengthened.
  • Their auditions have gotten better results and are more satisfying.
  • Other people respond quit differently to them. Women, especially, say they are taken more seriously.

Oates explains that, “Not so long ago I was asked to narrow down what my acting approach was. I came to realize that I rely most heavily on my vocal training. Not vocal training in terms of singing - but of the spoken voice. And as I listen to my fellow actors, I find that most often they get caught or have trouble with a role when their voices "fail" them. When they "fail" to accurately communicate the emotions they feel.” Oates recently moved here from New York and made her Kansas City debut as the lead in Gorilla Theatre's Major Barbara. She has studied acting in Indiana, New York and London.

During the eight week course, students will learn a series of exercises that will lead them to freeing their own voice. The first third of each class will be spent working with the exercises and the remaining class time will be devoted to "finding your voice" through monologue work.
